STORAGE SYSTEM CABLING

MODULE OVERVIEW: PAGE 1 In this module you will be introduced to the FAS2000 series cabling configurations and the various procedures for cabling. This module should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. MODULE OBJECTIVE: PAGE 2 By the end of this module, you should be able to: Explain various supported cabling configurations for the FAS2020, FAS2040, and FAS2050 Identify basic procedures for cabling

SUPPORTED CONFIGURATIONS FOR THE FAS2000 SERIES SYSTEMS: PAGE 3 This section will review several supported configurations for the FAS2000 series systems. Configurations for FC and SAS port connections as well as the PCI expansion cards that add additional FC, SAS, and iSCSI ports will be highlighted. We will use illustrations shown to help demonstrate these various cabling configurations.

FAS2000 SHELF COMPATIBILITY: PAGE 4 NetApp storage systems use disk shelves as an alternative to sequential-access tape drives. Each storage system has several Fibre Channel ports in the rear of the system which you can attach the disk shelves to. The number of ports varies by storage system.

FAS2020 CONNECTIVITY OVERVIEW: PAGE 5 The FAS2020 storage system supports stand-alone or active-active configurations with Copper Ethernet, Copper RS-232 Console, and Optical Fibre Channel. The system supports disk expansion for the DS14mk2 AT and DS14mk4 FC. The system does not support I/O expansion. The maximum external expansion disks is 56.

SUPPORTED FAS2020 CONFIGURATION: STAND-ALONE ETHERNET: PAGE 6 In a FAS2020 stand-alone NAS configuration, the e0a and e0b Gigabit Ethernet ports are interchangeable. The MGMT port is capable of 10/100 base Ethernet only. Both MGMT and data ports can be isolated or on a shared network. A single or dual Ethernet switch can be used.

SUPPORTED FAS2020 CONFIGURATION: ACTIVE-ACTIVE NAS-ISCSI WITH A BACKUP DEVICE: PAGE 7 In an active-active NAS configuration, the FAS2020 can support a backup device where 0b ports are not used. This configuration is not valid for the diskless storage system.

SUPPORTED FAS2020 CONFIGURATION: PAGE 8 In this example of an active-active NAS configuration, the FAS2020 supports one Fibre Channel shelf loop (dual-path), two DS14 shelves and a backup device. Please note that the number of DS14 shelves is not limited to two. Additional shelves may be added up to the maximum spindle count which is 14 per DS14.

SUPPORTED FAS2020 CONFIGURATION: PAGE 9 In this example of an active-active NAS configuration, the FAS2020 supports 1 Fibre Channel shelf loop (multipath) and up to 2 DS14 shelves. Note that the number of DS14 shelves is not limited to two. Additional shelves may be added up to the maximum spindle count which is 14 per DS14. SUPPORTED FAS2020 CONFIGURATION: STAND-ALONE SAN WITH TWO FIBRE CHANNEL CONNECTIONS: PAGE 10 The FAS2020 supports a stand-alone SAN configuration with two FCP connections. Ports 0a and 0b must connect to the same switch. It is important to remember that this configuration is not valid for diskless configurations. SUPPORTED FAS2020 CONFIGURATION: STAND-ALONE SAN WITH ONE FIBRE CHANNEL CONNECTION AND ONE BACKUP DEVICE: PAGE 11 In a stand-alone SAN configuration with one Fibre Channel protocol connection, the FAS2020 supports a backup device. For this configuration, the 0b port must be changed from its default mode (target) to initiator mode. Also, this configuration does not support diskless configurations. SUPPORTED FAS2020 CONFIGURATION: ACTIVE-ACTIVE SAN WITH FOUR TARGET FIBRE CHANNEL CONNECTIONS: PAGE 12 In an active-active SAN configuration with four FCP connections, ports 0a and 0b ports must connect to different switches.

SUPPORTED FAS2020 CONFIGURATION: PAGE 13 In this example of an active-active SAN configuration with a FAS2020 and DS14 disk shelves with two FCP connections, ports 0a must connect to the same switch. In the configuration shown, two DS14 shelves are supported and ports 0a and 0b would need to be configured as targets. Note that the number of DS14 shelves is not limited to two. Additional shelves may be added up to the maximum spindle count which is 14 per DS14.

SUPPORTED FAS2020 CONFIGURATION: ACTIVE-ACTIVE SAN TWO FCP CONNECTIONS AND A BACKUP DEVICE: PAGE 14 In an active-active SAN configuration with two FCP connections and a backup device, ports 0a and 0b will need to be configured as targets.
