TEST 3
Thursday 9 Aug 2012 5.30 pm 7 pm Answer all questions. 1. If the electric hoist B as shown below winds the cable around its drum at a constant speed of 4 m/s, determine the speed of box A as it moves along the slope. If there is no friction between the 5-kg crate and the slope, what is the tension in the cable? Neglect the masses of the pulleys and cables.
[20 marks]
2. A train is approaching a station with a constant velocity of 30 m/s, when the brakes are applied causing a deceleration proportional to time, a = -0.2t m/s2 where t is time measured in seconds. Determine the time required for the train to stop, and the distance travelled while it is decelerating. [20 marks] 3. A football player kicks a ball on the ground with a velocity of 14 m/s at an angle of 25 from the horizontal. Determine the maximum height reached by the ball. Ignore air frictional effects and the size of the ball. 25

4. A 70-kg woman is travelling up in an elevator. Suddenly the elevator slows down at a constant rate of 3 m/s2. Does the woman feel lighter or heavier? Determine the normal reaction force exerted by the elevator floor on the woman. [20 marks]
5. The 200-kg snowmobile with passenger is travelling down the hill such that when it is at point A, it is travelling at 5 m/s and increasing its speed at 2.5 m/s2. Determine the resultant normal force and the resultant frictional force exerted on the tracks at this instant. Neglect the size of the snowmobile.
