SPEECH ANALYSIS AND PROCESSING

Acad Unit: Prerequisite: Effective: Last update: OBJECTIVE

4.0 Nil Acad Year 2000-2001 (Semester 1) Aug 2001

To introduce students to digital processing of speech signals in both the time and frequency domain. To understand commonly used speech representation techniques and vocoders or speech compression systems. To familiarize students with feature extraction, classification and training techniques in speech recognition, such as Hidden Markov Models and Neural Networks.

DESIRED OUTCOME Upon completion of the course, the student should have gathered enough knowledge and understanding of principles behind digital speech processing and speech recognition so as to be able to contribute postively to companies working in the telecommunication, signal processing and information technology area. OTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION Students should have basic knowledge in Fourier Transform, Z Transform and statistics. The course has a moderate amount of mathematics. Prior knowledge of digital filtering techniques such as Finite Impulse Response filters and Infinite Impulse Response filters will also help in the understanding of the course matter. CONTENT Fundamentals of Speech. Speech Enhancement. Dynamic Time Warping. Hidden Markov Models (HMM). Speech Recognition and Speaker Verification Systems. Scalar and Vector Quantisation.
