Assumptions and Rumors

Misconception #1:

Chinese culture is
ancient.
In Reality:

While Chinese culture is one of the

oldest in the world, there is much
more to China than its ancient
history. China boasts a rich history
spanning thousands of years.
However, China is also a very
modern place.
Misconception #2

China is a poor
country.
In Reality:
Like any country, China has a mix of
citizens of many different socio-
economic backgrounds. While there
is a large class of low-income citizens
in China, there also exists a large
class of middle- and higher-income
citizens.
China continues to push towards a
goal of socio-economic development
by implementing programs that
address literacy and employment
Misconception #3

China is a backwards,
undeveloped
country.
In Reality:

While China is a developing country,

it is far from an undeveloped
country.
China is undergoing rapid, urban-
focused development.
It is estimated that by 2050, nearly
half of China’s population will live in
large cities.
China boasts state-of-the-art
infrastructure that is considered, by
Shanghai
•The largest city in China in terms of
population and one of the largest metropolitan
in the world, with over 20 million people.

•Shanghai has an extensive public transport

system, largely based on buses, trolleybuses,
taxis, and a rapidly expanding metro system.

•The Shanghai Metro is one of the fastest

growing systems in the world.
“Think about the amount of money that China has spent on
infrastructure. Their ports, their train systems, their airports
are all vastly the superior to us now...”
China is home to some of the world’s
largest and most modern cities.
