dents! got! to! do.! ! THON,! one! of!
the! biggest! student9run! philan9
thropies! in! the! world,! hosted! its!
root! beer! pong! night! to! raise!
money!for!kids!with!cancer.!!!!!!!!!
!!!Students!paid!four!dollars!each!
to! enter! the! tournament,! and! got!
to! play! up! against! some! pretty!
stiff!competition!!!Teams!of!two!
stood! on! either! side! of! a! table!
with! ten! cups! in! front! of! them!
arranged! in! a! triangle.! Each!
team!had!two!chances!to!get!the!
ball!into!a!cup.!!Once!they!made!
it! in,! the! cup! was! removed,! and!
the!first!team!to!take!all!the!cups!
out!was!the!winner.!
!!!Hunter!Fisher,!a!freshman,!got!
lucky.!!He!was!actually!working!
with!Donna!Rhodes!and!was!not!
going! to! attend,! but! one! student!
was! left! without! a! partner,! and,!
thanks! to! a! donation! from! an9
other! student,! he! was! able! to!
play.!!He!and!his!partner!made!it!
pretty! far! in! the! tournament! and!
it! was! fun! to! watch! them! come!
together! and! take! out! some!
fierce! competitors.! ! When! I!
asked!him!what!his!favorite!part!
was he responded, 'Having the
last!cup!standing!and!sinking!the!
ball in. I also asked iI he would
ever! attend! another! root! beer!
pong night: 'DeIinitely.!
!!!Michael! Giuliani,! a! sopho9
more,! made! it! down! to! the! final!
two! teams! of! the! whole! tourna9
ment.!!I!asked!him!why!he!came!
out,! and! he! simply! said,! for! the!
kids.! ! I! asked! if! he! was! nervous!
or!anxious,!but!he!said!neither.!
!!!Lindsey! Lowrey,! a! freshman!
and also Giuliani`s competition
in! the! final! round,! was! also! not!
nervous.! She! and! her! partner,!
Taylor! Hoak,! took! out! every!
team!with!ease,!and!came!out!as!
the!overall!winners!in!the!end.!!!
!!!Lowrey! said! that! she! spent!
every! night! practicing! for! the!
tournament.! ! When! asked! if! she!
and! Taylor! had! any! strategies!
going! into! the! tournament! she!
said, 'Not at all. Just shoot Ior
set9ups! where! we! could! make!
one cup but knock out two. I
asked! what! she! thought! before!
going! into! the! final! round,! and!
she said, 'Dude, we got this!
OI the event, Lowrey said, 'It
was!fun!and!great,!and!I!wonder!
how! all! the! guys! feel! about! two!
girls beating them!!
!!!Overall,! root! beer! pong! was! a!
big! hit.! ! Not! only! was! it! a! fun!
night! for! everyone,! but! students!

!!!Dr.! Boon! first! started! out! in!
theater! and! music! while! in! At9
lanta.!He!even!earned!a!scholar9
ship! to! attend! acting! school.!
When!he!went!to! Florida!he!be9
came! a! psychology! major.! He!
later! worked! at! American! Ex9
press,! before! returning! to! col9
lege Ior his Master`s. He transi-
tioned! to! the! English! depart9
ment,! and! after! attaining! his!
Ph.D.! found! a! position! at! our!
campus.!
!!!An!avid!musician,!Dr.!Boon!is!
author!and!editor!of!a!number!of!
books,! both! creative! and! schol9
arly.! Dr.! Boon! has! published!
screenplays!and!stage!plays,!is!a!
painter! and! poet,! ! and! has! also!

is! a! film! project! that! was! over9
seen! by! Dr.! Boon,! who! also!
composed! music! for! the! film.!

The! first! two! semesters! were!
behind9the9scenes,! as! Boon!
and! his! students! completed!
such!tasks!as!writing!and!edit9
ing.! Then! came! a! semester! of!
filming,! after! which! the! project!
wrapped! up! with! the! messy!
work! of! editing! and! post9
production.!
!!!The! movie! is! about! a! girl!
named! Emma.! At! age! 5,! she!
follows! a! feral! boy! into! the!
woods! and! is! lost! for! two! days.!
Although! she! remembers! noth9
ing! of! her! ordeal,! Emily! contin9
ues! to! avoid! the! woods.! Years!
later! she! goes! up! a! mountain!
with! a! group! of! environmental!
students,! to! try! and! catch! for9
estry! students! suspected! of! ille9
gal! foresting.! People! start! to! go!
missing,! and! bodies! begin! to!
appearP! but! before! the! students!
can! make! it! back! down! the!
mountain! and! escape,! they!
stumble! across! a! hunter's! cabin!
!and!Emma!is!forced!to!relive!
her!dark!and!tragic!past.!

three! or! more,! Mont! Alto! stu9
dents!proved!that!when!it!comes!
to! helping! the! kids! no,! obstacle!
is!too!big!to!overcome.!
!!!Prospects! for! the! weekend!
seemed! dark.! The! streets! filled!
with! rain,! and! the! temperatures!
were in the low 50s. Did that
stop! the! members! of! THON!
from! raising! money! for! the!
kids?! No.! Groups! ventured! eve9
rywhere! from! Waynesboro! to!
Chambersburg! to! even! Gettys9
burg Ior this year`s Iirst canning
weekend.! Students! went! out! in!
rain! ponchos! and! boots,! and!
stood!outside!for!29hour!shifts!at!
various!locations.!!
!!!Hearing! the! joy! and! kindness!
in people`s voices as they do-
nated! was! enough! to! make! one!
want!to!cry.!One!story!was!espe9
cially! inspiring.! While! canning!
Sunday! at! Starbucks! in! Cham9
bersburg,! Mont! Alto! students!
Katherine!Gil!and!Brenda!Reyes!
experienced! an! act! of! personal9
ized! kindness.! In! the! pouring!
rain,! a! man! stopped! his! car! to!
give! a! ten! dollar! bill.! The! gen9
tleman! said,! "Cancer! prevention!
is!something! I!am! very!passion9
ate about, and I`m glad that
young! people! are! helping! fight!
to!find!a!cure."!!

dollars! or! a! quarter,! students!
were! thankful! for! the! gracious9
