Equations and Inequalities

Equations :-

An equation is an expression which contains a variable ( or more ),constants , and the equality symbol. For example 3 Is an equation of two variables is not an equation, it is just an expression . Solving an equation is to find all values of the variable which satisfy the equation. We will review two kinds of equations.

Linear equations of One Variable

A linear equation of one variable is of the form ax + b = 0, where a ,b and a 0 . To solve a linear equation we follow these steps: Eliminate each bracket. Put the terms of variable on one side and constants on the other side. Divide both sides by the coefficient of the variable . Example 1
Solve the equation .

Second degree equations of one variable

A second degree equation of one variable is of the form ,

Where a,b,c and a 0. This kind of equation has two solutions, called its roots. The following formula will solve any equation of this kind

To apply this formula we have to determine a, b, and c correctly .The expression , called the distinguisher, will distinguish the roots as follows: If If If

Example 2 Solve the equation Solution First, we have to determine a ,b , and c correctly. So, we write the equation in its standard form.

There are several methods to solve second degree equations other than the formula above. Most of them use the zero factor theorem: If First method: When c = 0. So the equation will be of the form

Example 3 Solve the equation Solution

Second method: When b = 0. So the equation will be of the form provided

Example 4 Solve the equation 2 Solution 2 =

Third method:
By factoring and applying the zero factor theorem. Example 5 Solve the equation Solution
