Functions of the
Respiratory System

Takes in oxygen
into the body

Removes carbon
dioxide from the
body
Let’s look closely at the breathing process.
• Both animals and plants take in oxygen and
gives off carbon dioxide.
• However, during photosynthesis, plants take in
carbon dioxide and gives off oxygen.
The breathing process

The nose
• The air you breathe in goes from the nose
to the windpipe.
• Tiny hair keeps the mucus and dirt out of
the lungs on the way down to the windpipe.
The breathing process

• The windpipe
• The windpipe connects
your nose to your lungs.
• The air travels through
the nose to the windpipe.

Windpipe
The breathing process

• The bronchi
• When the air you breathe
goes down your windpipe, it
comes to a fork in the road.

• These are the BRONCHI. Windpipe

• One tube goes into your right

lung, and the other goes into
your left lung.
Bronchi
The breathing process

• The Lungs
• You have 2 lungs.
• The left lung is slightly smaller
than the right lung.
• The lungs are protected the
ribcage.
• The diaphragm beneath the
lungs works with the lungs to
allow you to inhale and exhale
air.
The breathing process

Air Sacs
• When air enters your lungs, it
goes through smaller tubes
until it reaches the air sac.

• This is where the oxygen

from the air enters your
blood and carbon dioxide is
removed from your body.
Air Sacs
How do the lungs and diaphragm work
together?

When you breathe in,

• Your diaphragm contracts,

• Your lungs grow larger as they are

filled with air.

• The size of our chest increases.

How do the lungs and diaphragm work
together?

When you exhale,

• Your diaphragm relaxes and moves

up, pushing air out of the lungs.

• Carbon dioxide and other wastes

leave the body.
