NETS-S and Common Core Grade: 4th

Common Core: Measurement and Data 4.MD.4 Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.

NETS-S Standard: 4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Indicator: Select and apply digital tools to collect, organize, and analyze data to evaluate theories or test hypotheses. Lesson Summary: As a class, students will use technology to better understand the concept of fractions through the use of interactive line plots. With the help of Chartle.net a series of line plot graphs will be made using different fractions. The students will be asked to use the line plots in order to solve problems such as addition and subtraction of the fractions. A Smartboard will be used in order to display the line plots for the students. The line plots in use will be based off of several different countries population growth. The students will be asked collect population data samples and then asked to plot the population sample for a country for selective years. The student will do this for five countries. The students will be asked to predict which country is growing at the fastest rate. With the use of the line plots the students will be able to determine which country is growing the fastest and at what rate, in regards to fractions. The students will be able to analyze that data on the line plots in order to make their decision. The students can then further advance their knowledge and convert those growth rate fractions to percentages.

NETS-S and Essential Standard Learning Subject: Social Studies Grade: 4th Common Core: History 4.H.2 Understand how notable structures, symbols and place names are significant to North Carolina. 4.H.2.1 Explain why important buildings, statues, monuments and place names are associated

with the states history. NETS-S Standard: 1. Creativity and Innovation Indicator: applies existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes Lesson Summary: The teacher will instruct the class on the history of North Carolina. Within the lesson will be details of important people, symbols, structures and places that had an impact on North Carolinas history. Students will learn the importance of people like Sir Walter Raleigh, who started two small colonies off of the coast of North Carolina, leaving us with the history of the Lost Colony on Roanoke island. The students will learn about the Civil War and major battles that were fought in North Carolina including the Battle of Morrisville and the importance of battle. Students will also learn about the history that occurred in their own back yards when discovering the importance of Wilmingtons ports and the Second Battle of Fort Fisher. Students will get to discover the 17th President Andrew Johnson and how he was born in North Carolina and his importance not only in North Carolina but in the U.S as well. Students will apply what they learned about the history of North Carolina by putting together a presentation. The presentation will include people, places and events that are significant to North Carolinas history. The students are allowed to use any multi-media tool they choose in order to present a thought provoking, accurate presentation.
