The Meaning and Importance of Baptism


Helps you become a member of the Church (initiation sacrament) Washes away your original sin Helps bring salvation Gives you the light of Christ Parents and God-parents make promises on your behalf which you will say in your confirmation. They promise to bring you up as a catholic (vows).

The Meaning and Importance of Confirmation


The person is old enough to make their own decisions and renew their baptismal vows in the sacrament of confirmation. It gives them grace and the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is the final initiation sacrament- making them a full member of the Church. Helps them on their path to salvation.

The Meaning and Importance of Reconciliation


Forgives the persons sins Brings them closer to God It is a percept of the Church- an important sacrament we are to take part in. Gives grace and helps us on our path to salvation. We make amends for our wrong doings- penance Mends our relationship with God which has been broken because of sin.

The Meaning and Importance of the Anointing of the sick.


Gives seriously ill people the strength to face grave illness and death. It gives spiritual help to the person in need. They receive grace and the Holy Spirit. Forgives sins and strengthens faith. Joins the ill person and the community together Reminds us of Jesus healing powers and the fact that he suffered on the cross.

The Nature of Mass


A Re-enactment of the Last Supper- celebration of the resurrection. Meet as a community of believers and give thanks to God. Feel the presence of God and learn about him. Receive the Eucharist body and blood of Christ (transubstantiation) 4 parts to mass 1. penitential rite- remember we are sinners 2. liturgy of the word- readings and homily 3. liturgy of the Eucharist and rite of communion 4. dismissal- give thanks for what we have received.

The Eucharist in other Christian traditions


Catholic Church- the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ- transubstantiation. Eastern orthodox Church- the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ by a holy mystery Nonconformists protestant Churchescommemoration of the Last Supper, where the bread and wine are symbols which do not change. The salvation Army and Quakers- Have no Eucharist as we should not worship God through symbols.

The Importance of Christmas


Incantation- when God became man Without the birth of Jesus there would be no Christianity. No salvation from sin without Christ. Remember Gods gifts to humanity. Worship God and come together as Christians. A time of hope and peace. Shows how much God loves us as he sent his only son.

The Importance of Lent


Lent is 40 days and 40 nights of preparation for Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday. Reflects the time Jesus spent in the desert preparing spiritually for his ministry. He did not give in to temptation. We remember what Jesus did for us- we pray, fast and we give to others ( alms giving). A time when many Catholics pray the stations of the cross and go to reconciliation.

The Importance of Holy Week


This is the last week of Lent. A time when Catholics re-enact and remember the final week of Jesus life. Holy days include- Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, God Friday and Holy Saturday. A time of reflection and prayer Reminds Catholics of Jesus suffering. Stations of the cross

The Importance of Easter


Celebrates the resurrection of Jesus- Jesus rising from the dead. Easter Vigil- renewal of baptismal vows. Proves Jesus is the Son of God and why we are Christians. When Jesus brought salvation- eternal life. Forgiveness of sins. Victory over evil
