What is Tata?
It is an Indian multi-national company. It employs 350,000 people worldwide. It owns a large number of businesses. It owns 38 companies in the UK, including Jaguar, Land Rover and Tetley Tea.
Owners
Tata is a private company, founded in 1868 by Jamsetji Tata. Its headquarters are in Mumbia and the company is now owned by Jametjis sons. The Chairman is Ratan Naval Tata and Cyrus Pallonji Mistry is the Deputy Chairman.
History
It was founded as a private trading firm in 1868. In 1902 it incorporated the Indian Hotels Company. After 1904, it quickly diversified, venturing into new industries; steel (1907), electricity (1910), consumer goods (1911) and aviation (1932) etc.
History Continued
Then, from 1938, the company continued its expansion, such as chemicals (1939) and cosmetics (1952). In 1945 they established the Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO); it was renamed Tata Motors in 2003. In 2000, they acquired Tetley Tea and in 2004 it purchased Daewoo Motors.
Sectors
Tata compasses seven business sectors: communications and information technology, engineering, materials, services, energy, consumer products and chemicals. It has operations in more than 80 countries and its companies export products and services to 80 nations.
Acquisitions
February 2000, Tetley Tea Company $407 million. November 2004, Tyco Global Network $130 million. June 2006, Eight OClock Coffee - $220 million. March 2008, Jaguar Cars and Land Rover - $2.3 billion.
