Urban Justice Center Safety Net Project SNAP (Food Stamp) Intern

The Urban Justice Center (UJC) is a nonprofit legal organization dedicated to advocacy on behalf of New York Citys most vulnerable residents. The mission of UJCs Safety Net Project (SNP) is to advocate for economic justice for no and low income New Yorkers by conducting direct legal services, community outreach, litigation, research and policy advocacy to preserve and expand access to public benefits programs and ensure government accountability. At Urban Justice Centers SNAP clinics, we go above and beyond pre -screening people for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). We connect them with the best legal and community services that we can. We work closely with community organizations across the boroughs to ensure that eligible-persons have the best experience possible with the SNAP process as well as general public benefits concerns. We are seeking a SNAP intern to help ensure that all eligible persons are aware of and receiving the food assistance that they have a right to. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited, to: Interviewing individuals to determine their eligibility for the SNAP program Helping clients understand the government public benefits system Conducting follow-up calls to ensure eligible persons do not experience further obstacles Answering the SNAP hotline Inputting and collecting data Researching SNAP policies

SNAP interns will alternate between outreach, research, and data collection. Possible outreach sites include hospitals, community centers, churches, and courts. Successful candidates must have strong organizational and administrative skills, the ability to quickly learn about New York Citys complex SNAP system, an aptitude for engaging a variety of people, and a desire to work with New Yorkers living in poverty. Additionally, successful candidates will have the ability to work in multiple settings throughout the five boroughs while sensitively addressing the urgent needs of clients. Strong written, verbal, and organizational skills are essential. High proficiency or fluency in Spanish is required.
