Transition to School Procedure

Transition to school preparations commences at about 4 years although this

varies depending on the interest of the child.

1) School is talked about and stories are read about starting school.
Time is spent with children to promote literacy and numeracy skills
(including recognising and writing their own name. Children have
their own books consisting of examples of their work.
Parents/caregivers are encouraged to view these books with their
children.
2) A variety of experiences are offered to enhance language, maths,
reading, science and technology skills during the everyday
programme.
3) Independent skills are encouraged, e.g. toileting, hand-washing,
opening lunch box and drink bottle, dressing (shoes, sweatshirts) and
the ability to ask for help if needed. Social skills including turn
taking, large group activities are promoted. Children are encouraged
to express themselves and develop creative skills e.g. art, collage,
drama, singing, music and finger plays.
4) A folder of information from several schools is available in our parent’s
library area Open night information received from these schools are
displayed on the notice board.
5) When children leave, a farewell is given and children have the
opportunity to choose a special event to celebrate. The child’s
educational diary and other relevant information is passed on to
parents or caregivers and is signed off.
6) Parents are encouraged to visit schools and find the one that most
suits their child’s needs.
7) Where possible, parents are encouraged to take the child on school
visits. If this is not at all possible a pre-school teacher will endeavour
to do this.
