Social

Alpha Sigma Alpha Theta Epsilon

Spring 2013

Avery was chosen for the social sister due to her positions as the Vice President of Public Relations and Recruitment and Vice President of Programming and Ritual. Many of her sisters would say they looked up to Avery as their example of a great sister. Avery graduated in December of 2012 and will be attending the University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston.

Spiritual
I joined ASA my first semester at Schreiner. I was unsure of where I was going in life. Even if I knew where I wanted to go I had no idea how to get there. The sisters of Alpha Sigma Alpha changed my life. They taught me things about myself that, I had no idea I even needed to learn. Within the aims of ASA, I found myself drawn to the spiritual side of the sorority. I have always been a spiritual person. My senior year was the most difficult year at Schreiner. I was going through major family problems and the sisters surrounded me with love and grace. The last semester of my senior year, I was Ritual Chair. I felt something fall into place. I was working with the most sacred ASA materials and leading our rituals. Somehow being Ritual Chair helped me grow in my own faith in God. I cannot thank the sisters enough for helping me find my way. After graduation in 2010, I participated in two Young Adult Volunteer years through PCUSA. My first year in New Orleans, I was a hospital chaplain. My second year in Denver I worked at a hunger relief organization where I helped clients pay their past utilities. I now find myself in Richmond, Virginia attending Union Presbyterian Seminary to receive my Masters of Divinity and a Masters of Arts in Christian Education. I have just finished my first year and am participating in a summer internship at Mo Ranch as the Summer Chaplain Intern. I grew up attending conferences and youth retreats here. I am truly blessed to be able to give back to a place that has given so much to me. Through my years at ASA I have found the strength to follow my dreams of becoming a minister. The sisterhood that I found at Schreiner did not stop after graduation. While I dont keep in touch with everyone I have a few close sisters who continue to be there for me in my times of need. I encourage all of the sisters to let ASA help them figure out who they are and what they are called to do. Lean on each other in time of need. Thats what a sister is there for even after you exit the Schreiner gates and head out into world. Maegan Norman

Intellectual
Beth Fawcett

Being in ASA has completely changed my perspective on many different things. Currently, I am sitting in a classroom in the UTHSC at Houston during a break in a three hour biochemistry lecture hoping to pursue a career in clinical endocrinology. I wouldnt be where I am today without the motivation provided by the pillars of our sorority. One of those pillars is intellectuality. This word has a stigma attached to it, one that is mostly negative. People often think that you either have intellectuality or you dont. Most people write off being intellectual because they dont think that its possible for them. Our founders thought differently. There is a difference between being an academic and being intellectual. ASA recognized this distinction by encouraging membership in higher institutes of learning with a focus in education. This focus on continued learning was further cemented in the establishment of the Emma Coleman Frost Leadership Development Institute. Our founders kept trudging through and stimulating their minds. With this legacy behind me, Im pushed forward to be a better person that pursues the advancement of myself. That is what it means to be an intellectual, to never be satisfied. My question for you is, are you complacent with your station in life?

Physical
Chasity was chosen for the physical sister due to her Facebook example. Chasity is always checking in at the gym and can be found online with My Healthy Chef blog. Chasity graduated from Schreiner in 2008 and was married this year.

OBVIOUSLY!

Stars and Crowns
This year we have started a new tradition! We all know we have our rubies and pearls and of course our bigs and littles. But what happens after? We thought that it would be fun to match graduating seniors with current members so that there would be another contact within the chapter. It is also an opportunity to continue to include our alumnae and build stronger sisterhood bonds. We would also love to match an alumnae sister with an active member. If you are interested, please email asathetaepsilon@aol.com or send a message to the chapters Facebook page and we can match you up!

Congratulations!!

Fundraising Note
Theta Epsilon Chapter cordially invites you to Dancing with the ASA Stars, our major fundraising event this fall. It will be held on October 26, 2013 in the CCAC Ballrooms. At this event, there will be a show and a silent auction. We will be fundraising for Special Olympics, and most proceeds will go to them. However, this year, we are incorporating ASA baskets into the auction, and proceeds from these two baskets will go to our chapter. At the auction there will be a raffle and the proceeds will benefit Special Olympics. A featured raffle prize includes a painting gifted from Tivy High Schools Special Education Program. The main event, however, is the dancing. This years theme is Dancing Through Time and will feature dance styles from the past decades. We would love your participation and support! Remember, Life is not taking in only; it is giving out too. It is giving ourselves freely - to other people, giving ourselves in comradeship, in understanding, in joy, in love.
