Hawthorne Experiment

Prepared By: Aayush Shrestha Manish Shrestha Saroza KC.

About Elton Mayo

This was first thought by Elton Mayo (1880 1949), who is also the inventor of the human relations school Any business or an organization which wants to maximize their productivity must ensure that the workers of that organization are fully satisfied.

It also says that the management should allow the workers to be a part of the decision making process of the organization, as this will make the workers feel that they have some part to play in the organization.
The Hawthorne Studies are known today as the human relations school.

Initial Experiment Conducted By Mayo:

He believed that the working condition had the significant effect on productivity.

In his experiment he found that productivity increase if working environment were changed and even when it remained same.

He concluded that working conditions had no effect on productivity

Further Experiments Conducted By Mayo:

More experiments were conducted on assembly line workers.

But this time before any changes were made he discussed about them with the workers

Output rose far beyond the original level

Conclusions
When management consult with workers and take an interest with work, then motivation is improved.

Working in teams can improve productivity

When some control over their working lives is given to workers, there is a positive motivational effect.

Examples Of Modern Business Using Mayos Ideas:

The Volvo plant in Uddevalla, which opened in 1989, allowed the workers to work in groups. Each group was given the privilege to make their own decisions, the groups built complete cars. Volvo found that absenteeism rates at Uddevalla averaged 8 per cent, compared to 25per cent in their Gothenburg plant which used the production line system.
