QUESTION 10:

Given that the demand function is p(x) = -2x + 5 000, the cost is
C(x) = x2 + 2 000x + 800, find the value of x which will maximise the
profit.

SOLUTION :

p(x) = -2x + 5 000

C(x) = x2 + 2 000x + 800
R(x) = p(x) x x
=(-2x + 5 000)x
R(x) =-2x2 + 5 000x
P(x) = R(x) C(x)
= -2x2 + 5 000x [x2 + 2 000x + 800]
= -2x2 + 5 000x x2 2 000x 800
P(x) = -3x2 + 3 000x + 800
P`(x) = -6x + 3 000
When P`(x) = 0 ;
-6x + 3 000 = 0
3 000 = 6x
3 000 = x
6
500 = x

The answer.
