Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Properties of 2D Shapes Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should be able to classify two-dimensional shapes according to their edges and vertices. Most students should be able to classify two-dimensional shapes according to their edges, vertices and reflective symmetry. Some students should be able to classify two-dimensional shapes according to their edges, vertices and reflective and rotational symmetry. Keywords: Vertex, vertices, edge, polygon, symmetry, reflection, rotation, perpendicular Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students classify simple 2D shapes using a Venn diagram considering straight and curves edges and parallel sides. To extend these students could consider shapes, which would go into a particular region. For instance, a rhombus would be classified in the centre. Development Use the green shapes on the second slide to introduce and consolidate key vocabulary, such as, right angles, parallel, edge. The class could practise the spellings of the individual names or draw the shapes next to the each description. The third slide is intended to examine the properties of each shape in turn. The Microsoft Excel file could be printed out for the students to work from. To extend this activity hand out to the class a selection of 2D shapes that are different to the ones presented and have them categorised. A further extension could be to consider the rotational and reflective symmetry of each shape in addition to the edges and vertices. Plenary The plenary is intended to consolidate and extend the learning of the lesson by having the class determine the shape when given its description. To differentiate this for the less able, students could be given a selection of possible shapes to choose from. Have solutions presented on mini-whiteboards for assessment and feedback. Differentiation More able: Students could consider the various quadrilaterals. Students could investigate which 2D shapes have a given reflective and rotational symmetry. Less Able Students may benefit from having the correct spellings and definitions of the keywords. Resources: Mini-whiteboards Microsoft Excel File
