IR ASSIGNMENT

MUSTAFA AMIR ZIA ID: 10U0683 SECTION: E

Q1) Explain Fredrick Nietzsches will to power theory. How does it lead to cruelty? A1)
Fredrick Nietzsche was a European philosopher. The will to power describes

what Nietzsche may have believed to be the main driving force in humans: achievement, ambition, the striving to reach the highest possible position in life; these are all manifestations of the will to power. Nietzsches view on power was that the will to power is to dominate others and control the environment around you. Nietzsche was of the view that the main driving force in humans was their will to power i.e. their ambition and achievement. He labeled the world as a will to power and nothing else. Nietzsche believed that it is natural for human beings to be in constant search of power as many living things do the same in order to maintain some sort of order. Even a wolf pack around us would be led by an alpha wolf who will act as the leader of the group. This takes us back to the concept of realism where one of the six principles of realism says that interest is defined in terms of power. This principle basically says that it is the national interest of all states to achieve unlimited power. There are different cases in which it is quite evident that a state does whatever it does to be known as an influencer in terms of controlling the environment around it.

A very relevant example of this is the US war on Iraq. The US gave the reason that Iraq possesses Weapons of Mass Destruction which posed a threat to the world. The UN did not permit the US to attack Iraq but the US was not to be moved. It was quite clear that the US had its personal benefits that it wanted to achieve and they were none other than power. It was clear that there were no weapons present in Iraq and so the hidden motive behind the attack was no visible. Over the years there have been a lot of deaths in the US war on Iraq which has given birth to cruelty. Thousands of soldiers have lost their lives and so the attack has raised many eyebrows. This proves that Nietzsches will to power theory has led to cruelty. In conclusion, taking example of sadam hussain who was a great leader of his time. Having power in his hands and wanting the world to revolve around him made him kill his brother, sonin-law and nephews, this showed that power is everything to survive.
