At time of writing the Dec '13 EUA Contract was at 3.26. Nothing much to report today, no failed auctions. Carbon is ever so slightly bullish and this has been put down to the fact that auction supply is being met by demand. Oversupply has reached record levels and many analysts believe that we are on the knife edge of further drops, citing a failed auction as the main possible trigger, we have had three already. Still, we have the same old soundbites emanating from Europe. Today is the compliance deadline. More than 13,000 installations will have to hand in allowances matching their verified emissions or face a fine equivalent to 100/tonne. It has come to light that many companies are opting out of phase 3 of the EUETS. Commercials that emit less than 25,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum can close their accounts once their respective governments have other provisions for cutting GHG's. Currently, we are witnessing the selling of surplus's into the market. The main reason they are doing so is to avoid paying registry fees needed to stay in the market. If we take the UK as an example, a total of 248 out of the 1,196 installations in the UK,(20% of phase 2 UK participants) have withdrawn from phase 3 . These include facilities owned by Carlsberg, Pirelli, Stansted airport and over 50 hospitals.
