    The definite article "the" has several uses in English and Spanish: 1) It is used before singular and plural nouns which refer to things that are unique or considered unique, such as the earth, the sea, the sky. 2) It is used the second time a noun is mentioned, such as referring back to a tree that was hit by a car. 3) It is used before nouns made definite by additional context, such as a girl wearing blue or the first week. 4) The definite article has similar uses in Spanish, appearing before nouns like la tierra, el mar, el cielo in the same contexts as in English.
