VEHICLE SUSPENSION RESPONSE DUE TO ROAD UNEVENNESS

ABSTRACT
The Increasing demand for higher level of ride comfort necessitates better understanding of the dynamic behaviour of a vehicle system. In this project, it is proposed to study dynamics of rubber-tired highway vehicles with a view of evaluating ride response due to road surface roughness/variations. Starting with the simplest mathematical representation (single degree-of-freedom-SDOF) of a quarter-car model, response due to road surface variations are computed analytically and numerically and then additional details are added to improve the understanding. Due to the drawbacks of the passive suspension system, a quarter car model based on semi active and active suspension system is studied and their responses are compared with the passive suspension system.

OBJECTIVE
To use a quarter-car model to study ride response due to road unevenness beginning with a SDOF model for vertical motion only. To improve the understanding of response by adding details to the mathematical model. To find the response of a semi active quarter car model with MR fluid dampers. To find the response of a quarter car model with an active suspension system

CONCLUSION
SDOF holds well for lower frequencies(3-5 Hz) and 2dof holds well for higher frequencies (30-50 Hz) semi active quarter car model with MR fluid dampers offered advantages of 7% decrease in overshoot and 17% decrease in settling time and active suspension system offered 17% decrease in displacement and 31% decrease in settling time when compared to a passive system
