Most blues music is based on a structure of 12 bars. This structure is typically broken down into three four-bar
phrases. You can see how these phrases work in the classic old blues song shown below, C.C. Rider :
This creates an AAB structure (i.e. the first two sections are the same and the third is different). The actual harmo-
ny of the typical blues, including C.C. Rider, is based on the primary chords I, IV, and V. These chords are usually
turned into dominant 7
th
type chords (i.e. A7, D7, and E7) and arranged in the following sequence:
Phrase 1: C.C. Rider, see what you have done. This is sung within the first four bars.
Phrase 2: C.C. Rider, see what you have done. Phrase 2 (bars 58) is a repeat of phrase 1.
Phrase 3: Well you made me love you, now your love is gone. A new phrase is sung to round things off.
