SYNOPSIS

Application of Remote sensing and GIS in ground water prospect

Water plays a vital role in the development of any activity in the area. Thus, the availability of surface and ground water governs the process of planning and development. The surface water resources are inadequate to fulfill the water demand. Productivity through groundwater is quite high as compared to surface water, but groundwater resources have not yet been properly developed through exploration. Keeping this in view, the present study attempts to select suitable locations for groundwater exploration in hard rock areas using an integrated approach of remote sensing and GIS. The ground water resource development planning for it s sustainable utilization requires in depth study of topographical, geological and hydrological characteristics of the domain. The occurrence of ground water and its potential are

mainly governed by the geography in addition to the surface and subsurface lithology, stratigraphy and structure of geologic formation. Therefore the study of the surface and subsurface distribution of rocks, their characteristics, thickness and depth below the land surface are the requisites for ground water development.
