LESSON PLAN 3 Technology Grade 3 National Standards NT.K-12.2 Social, Ethical and Human Issues

Students understand the ethical, cultural, and societal issues related to technology. Students practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software. Students develop positive attitudes toward technology uses that support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits, and productivity.

State Standards - Virginia Social and Ethical Issues C/T 3-5.3 Make responsible decisionsgrounded in knowledge of digital safety and security best practicesthat pertain to various digital communication tools and methods. A. Demonstrate knowledge of basic practices related to online safety. Use best practices for online safety as defined by the divisions online safety program. Demonstrate an understanding of the divisions acceptable use policy and consequences for inappropriate use. B. Discuss and model responsible behaviors when using information and technology. Identify reasons for taking security precautions when using any technology, especially those related to the Internet. Demonstrate responsible behavior, such as using strong passwords and

LESSON PLAN 3 avoiding high-risk activities. Identify inappropriate or threatening interpersonal situations involving electronic devices and develop strategies to react to them safely. Behave appropriately in virtual groups and be proactive in preventing bullying behavior in an environment that provides anonymity to bullies. C/T 3-5.5 Demonstrate digital citizenship by actively participating in positive activities for personal and community well-being. Objective Students will be able to make responsible decisions - grounded in knowledge of digital safety and security best practices - that pertain to various digital communication tools and methods. Student will develop short term SMART goals to include one BHAG-Big Hairy Audacious Goal (per the late Dr. Jerry Falwell). Materials Needed 1. Computers for in-school use. 2. Internet access for teacher directed websites for independent work. 3. Word processing software. Diversity Internet safety is very important to consider when student are using computers whether on or off campus. Each year a contract is reviewed and signed by students and parents regarding the code of conduct expected when using school computers. Videos, classroom discussion, and direct instruction are used when teaching online safety so that students can work at their own pace as well as have monitored discussion on the subject of Internet safety.

LESSON PLAN 3 Because the computers are accessed during the school day, all students, regardless the diversities caused by cultural/social/economic matters, will be able to work with computers

during school hours and if necessary, afterschool times may be arranged as well to accommodate for students needs. Technology Inclusion The lesson is geared to teach proper etiquette and safety when using the Internet. Proper use of computers in general is also discussed. Procedures 1. Class discussion on safety tips for downloading from the Internet; identifying reasons for taking security precautions; identifying inappropriate or threatening interpersonal situations involving electronic devices and develop strategies to react to them safely. 2. Small group discussion and demonstration of what they like to do online. Discuss gaming, communication, typing, research, etc. 3. Individual students will list 3 basic ways to be safe online. Students will research YouTube.com for videos on examples of cyber safety to present to the class as directed by teacher. 4. Watch video on Netiquette followed by class discussion through Netsmartzkids.org. 5. Students will demonstrate knowledge of understanding of acceptable use policy in daily usage of technology, including the Internet by signing acceptable use policy. 6. Students will know how to develop strong passwords in order to protect personal information. Evaluation/Assessment 1. Student demonstration of skills daily.

LESSON PLAN 3 2. Student developed contract of how they intend to be safe online. 3. Participation grade given for classroom and small group discussion. Risk Analysis The risks to this lesson are the accessibility of computers for in-school use and access to

the Internet. There are several days built into in the plan to accommodate student absences.
