Designated a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) World Heritage site, the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, represents the emergence of western philosophy. The Parthenon, located in the Acropolis, represents the essence of ancient Greece. A symbol of democracy, the Parthenon also symbolizes the birth of western civilization. Greek leader Pericles gave instructions for erecting the Parthenon, which was built between 447 and 438 B.C.E. Dedicated to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom and the patron of Athens, the Parthenon earned its World Heritage designation about 2,500 years later in 1987.
