1. Three parallel flat plates are separated by two fluids. Plate 1 (on the bottom) is at rest. Water of viscosity 0.8007 cp at 30C lies between plates 1 and 2. Toluene of viscosity 0.5179 cp at 30C lies between plates 2 and 3. The distance between each pair of plates is 10 cm. Plate 3 moves at 3 m/s. Find: the velocity of plate 2 at steady-state; the force per unit area on plate 3 required to maintain the 3 m/s velocity. 2. The flow behavior of acrylic latex can be described by a Bingham plastic model with a yield stress of 112 dyn/cm2, a limiting viscosity, 0 , of 80 cp and a density of 0.95 g/cm3. What is the maximum thickness of this paint that can be applied to a vertical wall without running? 3. Viscometric data for heavy cream shows behavior of a pseudoplastic fluid that can be modeled well by a power-law relationship between shear stress, yx , and rate of shear,
dvx dy , at low shear rates. Assume the following data:

Shear stress, Shear rate,

yx

(dyn/cm2)

0.1 0.023

1 0.75

(sec-1)

Use these data to fit a power-law model. Evaluate the parameters m and n of the power model using SI units. Estimate the shear stress that would be expected at a shear rate of 0.1 sec-1. Compare the apparent viscosity of cream at this shear rate (0.1 sec-1) to that of water ( water = 1x10-3 N.sec/m2). 4. Water evaporating from a pond does so as if it were diffusing across an air film 0.15 cm thick. The mass diffusion coefficient (diffusivity) of water in 20C air is about 0.25 cm2/sec. If the air out of the film is 50% saturated, how fast will the water drop in a day? Assume that the vapor at the liquid-film interface is fully saturated. The vapor pressure of water at 20C is 17.5 mm Hg. ( Hint : Use ideal gas law suitably.) 5. (i) BSL Problem 1.A.2 (p.37). Estimation of the viscosity of methyl fluoride. (ii) BSL Question 2.11 (p.62). Profile of two immiscible liquids. 6. BSL Problem 2B.3 (p. 63). Laminar flow in a narrow slit.
