Transformer-basically what it is?

Thursday, February 28, 2013 10:10 PM

Transformer contains basically two coils (windings) ----one is called as Primary winding --for which the electrical supply is given. ----second coil is called as Secondary winding-- for which the load (electrical load) is connected.

When the voltage is changed from one value to the other value, the current also changes from one value to the other but opposite direction, i.e., if the voltage is reduced in secondary winding then the current increased in it. Also if the voltage is increased in secondary winding correspondingly current will be decreased. --> We can say that the transformer is a constant power or constant VA (voltampere i.e., voltage x current) device. --> That means if the primary voltage is less than the secondary voltage then correspondingly the primary current will be greater than the secondary current in the same proportion (for the same power) and vice-versa . Step down Transformer: --> If the voltage in the secondary winding is less than the primary voltage then that transformer is called as Step down transformer (as above figure) --> Correspondingly, the current in secondary winding will be greater than the primary current. --> As voltage is reduced from primary to secondary, obviously we can say that the number of turns in secondary are less than the primary winding turns. --> We use these transformers in distribution systems.(6.6 kV---> 440V) Step up Transformer: --> If the voltage in the secondary winding is more than the primary voltage then that transformer is called as Step up transformer.

that transformer is called as Step up transformer. --> Correspondingly, the current in secondary winding will be less than the primary current. --> We can say that the number of turns in secondary are more than the primary winding turns. --> We use these transformer in transmission systems.(11kV----> 132 kV)
