SPRING 2013

This spring NOSA was busy having fun while helping out the community! The Western Chapter did what NOSA does best; strive for excellence through fundraisers and community service events.

Club Extravaganza
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Thats what NOSA had the campus saying on March 6th at the WesternU Annual Club Extravaganza. NOSA officers sold ice cream while informing students on Campus all about our mission and goals.

Beeping Egg Hunt

Have you ever seen an OD in a kilt and bunny ears? NOSA had a successful fundraiser raising money for the Blind Childrens Center Beeping Egg Hunt. The eggs were audible so the children at the center could participate in an egg hunt. How did NOSA help raise money for the eggs? With the help of our professor of course! Dr. McAllister volunteered to wear a kilt and bunny ears while asking for donations from students and faculty. In return for a donation, students and faculty were given an Easter egg full of candy.

Reaching Out to Families and Communities: Eyes on Optometry

NOSA members volunteered at the Eyes on Optometry event made possible by Dr. Maeda, Dr. Yumori, third years Helena and Jolly and all our NOSA volunteers. Native American children from Sherman Indian High School were invited to WesternU to learn all about optometry. Students were able to participate in a cow eye dissection, which was a lot of fun for most of them. They learned about the importance of slit lamp exams, vision screenings and at the end of the day they were able to teach each other about certain eye diseases. NOSA hopes to see some of these students at WesternU in the future!

Zumbathon
NOSAs first ever Zumbathon was hosted on April 17th. Participants paid $5 for a twohour Zumba session. Instructors Maritza and Annette from a local Zumba center volunteered to show participants an exciting and action-packed workout routine. The room was full of females as well as males who were ready to shake it for an exhilarating workout! This event was a success; it had a great turnout and raised an outstanding amount of proceeds for the Eyes on Optometry Program. Be on the lookout for future NOSA Zumbathons!

Preview Day
The campus hosted a Preview day on April 27th in which NOSA participated in the campus Resource Fair portion for prospective students. The event is held many times throughout the year thanks to the Office of University Recruitment/Strategic Enrollment Management, which helped us promote optometry and NOSA. It was a great opportunity to help recruit a diverse group of undergraduate students into the field of optometry.

Spring BBQ
On March 17th, NOSA officers hosted a campus wide BBQ fundraising event. Familiar faces from all professions showed up hungry wanting burgers, chips and drinks. Fundraising is always easy when youre around hungry students and professors! The funds from this event went towards helping send members to the NOA/NOSA convention.
