SUGGESTEDRULESFORLINKINGGMTsIRON&OAKtoREBELRAIDERSONTHEHIGHSEAS

Introduction:Theseruleswould,wheneditedandacceptedbybothgamesDesign/DevelopmentTeams, bepresentedinthetwogamesrespectivePlayBooks.However,theRosterofShips,withGMTs consent,couldbealternatelyprovidedasaseparatesheet&includethelinkagerulesasabackprint. 1. GeneralConceptandRuleforlinkingIRON&OAKtoREBELRAIDERSONTHEHIGHSEAS(REBEL RAIDERS): 1.1 Atthediscretionofbothplayers,eitheragreedtoinadvancepertheirdefinedcriteria(e.g. anavalengagementinvolvingaparticularnumberortypeofships)orasanoccasional opportunity;aREBELRAIDERSnavalengagementwillnotusethatgamescombatruleswith relateddiemodificationsfromcards.Instead,theplayersemployIRON&OAKshipsand gamecomponentstoresolvethatnavalbattle. 1.2 Toaccomplishthis,whensuchanagreeduponnavalcombatresults,theREBELRAIDERS shipand/orBatterypiecesareremovedfromthemapandsetaside. 2. ThefollowingstepbystepprocedureisusedtoselectshipsandIRON&OAKplayingmap featurestoresolveaREBELRAIDERSnavalcombat.PlayersshouldreferencetheIRON&OAK/ REBELRAIDERSRosterofShips: 2.1 REBELRAIDERscontainsshippiecesforselectingspecificIRON&OAKvesselswhen resolvingaREBELRAIDERSnavalcombatusingtheIRON&OAKgame.SeparateUnion piecesbyclassofship:Gunboat,Ironclad,andSteamSloopplacingeachintoarandomizer (e.g.coffeecup)forwhentheyreneeded.DothesameforConfederateshipclasses: Gunboat,Ironclad,andRaider. 2.2 IfaspecificREBELRAIDERcardgeneratedshipisinvolved,forexample,card19USS Monitor,thatcardisdisposedpernormalREBELRAIDERSrules,e.g.forcarddiscardatthe endofabattle,butnoneofthatcardsotherfeatures/influencesareused.Thespecific namedshipisremovedfromtherandomizerandsetaside. 2.3 IfagenericREBELRAIDERshippieceisinvolved:Gunboat,Ironclad,Raider,orSteamSloop: theneededclassofshipsavailableareplacedintoarandomizerandoneisselectedforeach REBELRAIDERSpiece.Suchselectedpiecesaresetasideorplacedonthemapatopthe genericREBELRAIDERSpiece(forplayersdesiringtocreateashipscampaign.) 2.4 ForConfederateshoredefenses/fortifications,ifanyareinvolved,thesevarydependingon thenumberofREBELRAIDERBatterypiecesinthecombatspace.Seerule6. 2.5 TodetermineIRON&OAKshoalsanduniquecoastlineconfigurations,theREBELRAIDERS mapspacewherecombatistotakeplacedictatestheIRON&OAKbattleenvironmentas either:openwater,coastal,orriver.SeeIRON&OAKRuleBookfordetails. 2.6 SinceREBELRAIDERcardscanbeselectedmultipletimesduringagame,thenexttimea givenREBELRAIDERcardisselected,e.g.card19fortheUSSMonitor,thatparticularshipis NOTselected.Instead,anothershipofthatclassisrandomlyselected.Thepiecesetaside maybereplacedintheRandomizerper3.3iftheneededshipclassisunavailable. 2.7 BattlesmayinvolveshipsfromapriorIRON&OAKnavalengagementsresolution.Insuch instances,DONOTemploytherandomizertakethespecificallyidentifiedshippiecefrom theREBELRAIDERmapanddeployitsIRON&OAKrepresentationperrule3. ExampleOne:REBELRAIDERcard70hasbeenselectedtwiceduringagameanditistimeto setupabattleresolutionusingIRON&OAK.RegardlessofthefateoftheoriginalVirginia (seerule3);anotherConfederateIroncladmustbeselectedforthislatestplayofcard70. IRON&OAKsshipcardfortheCSSNorthCarolinaisthenselectedfromthatgames componentsforresolutionofthebattle. ExampleTwo:AUnionNavalforceofsixSteamSloopsunderFarragutisattackingasingle ConfederateBatterydefendingGalveston.ThreeUnionSloopsarealreadyidentifiedfrom priorIRON&OAKresolvednavalbattles:TheHartford,Kearsarge,andBrooklyn.These threeshippiecesaresetasidefortheupcomingIRON&OAKbattleandsupplementedby threeotherSlooppiecesdrawnfromtherandomizer.Thesixnowspecificallyidentified UnionSloopsarenowreadyfortheirIRON&OAKnavalcombatresolution. 3. Thespecificships,shoredefenses,and/orshoalcoastlinedemarcationsforanIRON&OAK battleresolutionaredeployedontheIRON&OAKmapandcombatresolvedusingIRON&OAK gamecomponentsandrules. 3.1 IfashipwithdrawsfromIRON&OAKbattle,itmusthavealegitimaterouteofretreatoutof theREBELRAIDERSnavalcombatspace.Ifnosuchretreatrouteexists,nowithdrawalmay bemadeandtheshipiseliminated. 3.2 SurvivingshipskeeptheirspecificREBELRAIDERSrandomizerpiecesontheREBELRAIDERS map.PlacetheshipsinwhateverREBELRAIDERmapspacestheyshouldoccupyafterthe battle.Thereafter,thesepiecesbecomeregularREBELRAIDERpieces. 3.3 Eliminatedshipshavetheirrandomizerpiecessetaside.Whenashipclasshasits randomizeremptied,thesesetasidepiecesrefreshtherandomizerforitscontinueduse. Allsetasidepiecesareplacedintotheappropriateshipclassrandomizertogether. 4. Ifagivenshipengagesinbattle,thequalityofitscrewmayimprove.Keeptrackofthiswiththe IRON&OAKshipcard.Noshipmayhaveacrewqualitybetterthanelite.TheIRON&OAK campaigngameemployspotentialgradeincreases(anddecreases)throughtheplayofCREW GRADEcardsandtheoutcomeofthebattle,e.g.,gradecannotincreaseifabattleislost.There arefourgradelevelsinIRON&OAK,Elite,Crack,Average,andGreen.InIRON&OAKgrademay affectmovement,combatorboth.Youcancertainlymodifyshipsgradebyanymeansthe playersagreetopriortocommencingagameorparticularbattle. 5. IRON&OAKalsosupportstorpedoes(mines),hulks,andheavyandnormalobstructions.The campaigngamesystemcanrandomlygeneratethemorplayerscoulddesignatetheirpresence andusetheIRON&OAKcampaignsystemtoplacethemonthemap.ShouldaRRcard indicatingsuch,e.g.card110Hulks,Rafts,ChainsbeinplayforaparticularNavalBattle, playersdesiringtouseI&Oshouldstronglyconsiderthis.SeetheIRON&OAKRuleBookfor details. 6. BATTERIES:ConvertingREBELRAIDERBatterypiecesintoIRON&OAKtermsshouldbedoneas follows: 6.1One RR Battery: Use any one Confederate Battery except the IRON & OAK Fort Morgan
Fortress Battery. 6.2 Two RR Batteries: Use any two IRON & OAK Confederate Batteries except the Fort Morgan Fortress Battery. 6.3 Three RR Batteries: Use the Fort Morgan Fortress Battery plus any one other Confederate Battery.

Design Note: There are three two-section batteries (Fort Gaines Fortress Battery, Fort Morgan Water Battery, and Vicksburg 'Bluffs' Battery), plus the four-section Fort Morgan Fortress Battery in IRON & OAK (see below graphic for an example). Each section takes the same number of hits/crew losses to put out of action, though the "armor" and especially the guns mounted are different.
