What is a genre based approach?

The learners study texts in the genre they are going to be writing. For example if the focus genre is a formal letter, then learners are given samples of formal letters to look at and analyze the key features. When this is done, they begin their own writing. The approach usually includes the following: Familiarisation, controlled writing, guided writing and free writing

Weaknesses

does not provide learners with adequate linguistic knowledge to write successfully. learners are largely passive
