1. A train initially at rest accelerates and moves along a straight horizontal track.

SCI1301 Physics Essential 03.04.13

a) With the help of a sketch, show how the displacement of the train varies with time. Explain how the instantaneous velocity is obtained from the graph. (2 marks) b) A cricketer throws a ball vertically upwards and catches it 4.0 seconds later. Neglecting air resistance, calculate the following: (i) (ii) (iii) the time which the ball reaches the maximum height; (1 mark) the speed with which the ball leaves his hands; (2 marks) the maximum height reached. (2 marks)

(Take g to be 9.8 m/s2) c) Sketch a graph to show how the velocity of the ball in (b) above depends on time during its flight. Mark on your graph the time at which: 1. the ball leaves the cricketers hands (Ta) (1 mark) 2. it comes to the maximum height (Tb) (1 mark) 3. it reaches his hands again (Tc) (1 mark)

2. a) Explain what is meant by the following terms and identify clearly which one are scalar and vector quantities: i) ii) Acceleration (1 mark) Velocity (1 mark)

b) Define the following terms and state their corresponding SI units: i) ii) c) Force (2 marks) Kinetic Energy (2 marks)

Express the SI units of the physical quantities in (b) above in terms of base units. (2 marks)

d) With the help of an example explain what is meant by derived units. (2 marks) 3. a) State Newtons 1st Law of motion. (1 mark) b) State the principle of conservation of linear momentum. (1 mark) c) Explain the term inelastic collision between two bodies. (2 marks)

d) During a journey, a lorry of mass 2000 kg was cruising on the highway at a constant speed of 20 m/s when suddenly it collided with a stationary vehicle of mass 1200 kg. The two vehicles coalesce during the collision. i) Determine the speed with which the interlocked vehicles travel immediately after the collision. (2 marks) ii) Calculate the kinetic energy of the lorry prior to this collision and the kinetic energy of the interlocked vehicles just afterwards. Comment upon the values obtained and the nature of the collision. (4 marks)
