add extrinsic incentives in order to enhance intrinsic motivation. In this
case there was a clear case of interference; the promise of the certifi-
cate framed the activity as something for which the children could ex-
pect a reward. When the reward was removed two weeks later, their in-
terest declined correspondingly. Study after study has reinforced this
finding: a reward for an intrinsically pleasurable activity tends to deval-
ue it (Williams & Burden 1997).

Implications for ELT: The moral is quite clear: rewards can back-
fire. While praise and encouragement are fine, anything more ‘tangible’
should be viewed with caution. Researchers stress that rewards are
certainly counter-productive if they are offered for activities which are
interesting in themselves (Aronson 1999). But what about other activ-
ities? What about activities which are a means to an end? Howe (1998)
points out that it makes sense to give an extra incentive to young learn-
ers in order to get them through the first difficult stages. For instance,
if a child is struggling through the tedious task of practicing endless s-
cales in order to learn to play the piano it makes sense to offer them
something as a recognition for their efforts. But on no account should
we continue when they start playing songs. Our aim should be to create

place your Wiimote next to the screen.
