Transmission of communication signals in the form of light over thin glasses or plastic is called optical fiber communication. Unlimited information carrying capacity. Basically telecommunication system contains a transmitter, receiver and an information channel(media). A laser source modulated by information signal act as transmitter. Total internal reflection Optical signals detected using APD or PIN at receiver. Advantages : higher data rates, low loss and longer distance, less weight or size, free from interference, electrical isolation and security.

Telephone signals are transmitted over copper wire at frequencies of 4KHz. Broadband communication at frequencies around 10^14 Hz Optical fiber communication is done at wavelengths of 1300nm and 1550nm. 1550nm range provides min. attenuation over light signals but has larger dispersion Attenuation for 1300nm =0.5dB/km Attenuation for 1550nm =0.2dB/km
