Tape Diagrams and Double Number Lines: Visual Tools for Thinking

Tad Watanabe Kennesaw State University twatanab@kennesaw.edu

Common Core Standards

6.RP.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.

Tape Diagrams & Double Number Line Diagrams

Tape Diagram (CCSS)
Tape diagram. A drawing that looks like a segment of tape, used to illustrate number relationships. Also known as a strip diagram, bar model, fraction strip, or length model.

Beckman & Fuson (2008)

Carlton had $72. Then he spent of his money on books and 3/8 of his money on sports equipment. How much money did Carlton have left?

Beckman & Fuson (2008)

If pound of nails fills a container 2/3 full, then how many pounds of nails will fill the container?

Double Number Line 101

There are 4 apples on each plate. If there are 6 plates, how many apples are there altogether? There are 2 different quantities: apples and plates. Draw a pair of parallel number lines, one for each quantity, that are hinged at 0.

Double Number Line 101

There are 4 apples on each plate. If there are 6 plates, how many apples are there altogether?

How do these quantities correspond?

Double Number Line 101

There are 4 apples on each plate. If there are 6 plates, how many apples are there altogether?

Practice Problem 1
1 meter of wire weighs 6.7 grams. How much will 8.7 meters of the same wire weigh?

Double Number Line 101

There are 24 students in a classroom and 6 large round tables. How many children should be seated at each table if there must be the same number of children at each table?

Practice Problem 2
7.4 meters of wire weigh 17.02 grams. How much will 1 meter of the same wire weigh?

Double Number Line 101

There are 24 students in a class. A hexagonal table can seat 6 students. How many hexagonal tables do we need to seat all students?

Practice Problem 3
1 foot of wire weighs 5 1/2 ounces. How long will the wire be if it weighs 32 ounces?

Double Number Line Diagrams

Multiplication

Double Number Line Diagrams

Division (Partitive)

Division (Quotitive)

Multiplication Makes Smaller?

1 m of wire weighs 15 grams.
How much will 0.7 meters of the same wire weigh? ? = 0.7 x 15 How much will 1.8 meters of the same wire weigh? ? = 1.8 x 15

Division Makes Bigger?

How much will 1 meter of the wire weigh if,
1.6 meters of wire weigh 18 grams? ? = 18 1.6 0.6 meters of wire weigh 18 grams? ? = 18 0.6

Representing Reasoning on DNL

With 1 pint of paint, we can paint 6/5 m2. How much area can you paint with 2/3 pint of paint? Draw a double number line representation of the problem. What calculation do you need to find the answer?

With 1 pint of paint, we can paint 6/5 m2. How much area can you paint with 2/3 pint of paint? Can we find out how much we can paint with 1/3 pint? How much can we paint with 2/3 pints?
