G Osaka began to play a great role in trade and cultural exchange with the establishment of its port, which opened in Naniwazu in the 5th century. The town enjoyed brisk business with mainland China and the Korean peninsula as well as benefitting from domestic trade links. In the middle ages, it prospered as a sea route and a land route terminal for pilgrimages to temples and shrines such as Kumano, and gradually a city emerged. Japan became unified under warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi at the end of the 16th century. He built Osaka Castle and a new town as he realized its convenient location which opened to the sea and prospered along the river. In the Edo period (1603-1868), canals ran throughout the city crammed with busy boat traffic laden with products from all over Japan. It was at the center of the Japanese economy and distribution, and was known as the Nations Kitchen. The Aqua Metropolis is still going strong, as evinced by the Water Corridor flowing through the center of t h e c i t y. T h e g r e e n e r y - f i l l e d O k a w a R i v e r Nakanoshima (Dojimagawa River, Tosaborigawa River) and the busy Osaka signature Dotombori area are connected with the Higashi Yokoborigawa River and Kizugawa River, forming a four-sided configuration rarely seen anywhere in the world. The waterfront charm extends from there to the Bay Area. You can enjoy cruising in every season, relax at a river front terrace or caf, and visit various amusements and a world famous theme park. The charm of the Aqua Metropolis knows no bounds.

Osaka was the center of economic development in Japan for a very long time, which is why there are a great number of dynamic landmarks with a historical air. Midosuji main street, 44m wide and 4km long, is one such place. The areas around the north and south terminals of Midosuji are the flourishing Kita and Minami, faces of Osaka. Kita is rapidly evolving now. A highly functional dome roof has been completed this year at JR Osaka station, connecting the north and south station buildings. There are four busy department stores near the station. In the north district of the station, a new town will be bor n under the concept of water and greenery in the spring of 2013, equipped with offices, commercial facilities, hotels and residential real estate. Minami is a genuine Osaka area, especially Dotombori. Hozenji-Yokocho Alley filled with ambience of olden times, the modern building of Namba Parks with its rooftop garden, a luxury brand street in Shinsaibashi and the like. The charm lies in this unique world where contrasting items co-exist unpretentiously. Abeno Qs Mall, the largest in Osaka, came into existence at the south gate of Tennoji and Abeno terminals. In addition, construction of the tallest terminal building in Japan is well under way. Please fully enjoy Osaka, a place which is always energetic and filled with points to see and enjoy.

Konamon gourmet
Konamon means our-based food, such as Okonomiyaki Pancakes, Takoyaki (octopus dumplings), noodles, etc. and the point of good taste lies in using stock in the batter for Okonomiyaki and Takoyaki, as well as in Udon noodle soup.
Osaka city joins Dlice a network of gourmet cities in the world. Dlice, advocated by the city of Lyon in France, was established to develop and promote food culture, enhance the spirit of ne dining and promote intercultural exchange between member cities, etc.
We urge you to come to shopping streets and markets to feel the liveliness of Osaka, a town of commerce. OSAKA CASTLE
The castle walls and turrets were designed and built during the Edo period (17th Mid19thC) to prevent any hostiles from entering the Castle. The two-story Inui turret and the powder magazine with its stone walls and ceilings are places of special interest. Thirteen of the buildings in the castle complex have been designated as important cultural assets.

In this masterpiece that is said to have been commissioned after the battle by the Fukuoka feudal lord Nagamasa Kuroda, the commander of the eastern forces, the various facets of the battlefield are clearly depicted, such as the castle and town prior to their destruction and the terrible confusion in the surround areas. Other items include many good examples of the writings, armor and weapons, pictures and woodblock prints.
