Introduction to CAMEL
Customised Applications for Mobile network Enhanced Logic (CAMEL) was developed as a standard for mobile intelligence across different vendor equipments for GSM network. This means that customer should be able to roam between different networks (maybe in different countries) and be reachable at the same number. Before CAMEL, the GSM networks used INAP (Intelligent Network Application Part) for injecting intelligence in GSM networks. The limitations of INAP was that it did not support mobility management. CAMEL solved the mobility management problem and provided with much more functionality.

Introduction to CAMEL
CAMEL has been divided into Phases.
CAMEL Phase 1 CAMEL Phase 2 CAMEL Phase 3 CAMEL Phase 4

The latest Phase is Phase 4. If an VPLMN (Visiting PLMN) supports CAMEL Phase 4, it shall also provide the functionality of all previous CAMEL phases.

CAP Version I Capabilities

Functionalities: Triggering on MO, MT and forwarded calls. Basic call services Introduced the concept of a CAMEL Basic call state model (BCSM) to the Intelligent Network (IN). Limitations: No IN announcements supported No charging operations Limited set of detection points.

CAP Version II Capabilities

Functionalities: Voice online charging Additional Event detection points Location based charging Supports announcements The ability to inform the SCF about the invocation of the supplementary services Explicit Call Transfer (ECT), Multi-Party Calls (MPTY) , etc. USSD communication between MS and service. Limitations: No support for GPRS No support for online chraging of roaming SMS

CAP Version III Capabilities

Functionalities:

Supports Real time SMS-MO charging. Supports Real time GPRS charging. Control call triggering of MT supplementary services (CW, hold, CF, CD, ECT, MPTY)
Additional Event detection points Support of facilities to avoid overload

Limitations:

No control over SMS MT
