Circuit Breaker Selection Maximum Operating Voltage From the single line diagram, we can see that the circuit breakers of Bus 1 have the maximum operating voltage at 13.8kV; circuit breakers of Bus 2,3,4,5, and 6 have maximum operating voltage at 230 kV; and circuit breakers of Bus 7 have maximum operating voltage of 15kV. Therefore, the rated maximum voltage for circuit breaker must be more than maximum operating voltage for each bus. Rated Continuous Current We also can see that all the loads are equal. Therefore, the load current at steady state can be found by S = VI*

14

Where S = Power consumed by load V = Operating voltage I = Load current Therefore, S = 50M+j30M = (230k) I* I* = (50M+j30M)/230k = 253.519630.9638 I = 253.5196-30.9638 A The requirement states that the rated continuous current must be at least 30% higher than normal load current. Therefore, the rated continuous current must be at least I_(CB,cont) = 1.3253.5196-30.9638 A I_(CB,cont) = 329.5755-30.9638 A
