COLLEGE PARK, Md. The University released figures for its minority enrollment for this fall based on self-reported student data, and showed that the minority enrollment increased 8.7 percent. Our many efforts of recent years are beginning to produce the desired results, said University of Maryland President, Wallace D. Loh. The universitys minority enrollment increased a year after the overall campus enrollment grew less than 1 percent. The American Indian student enrollment shows the largest increase of students with 23 percent. Other increases in student enrollment are: African American: 18.9% Asian: 11.8% Hispanic: 15.1% Comparing minority enrollment for previous years, the statistics show that minority enrollment five years ago was only 1,540 and increased by 23 percent this year. The increase in minority students is a gratifying sight for the many students, faculty and administrators who have worked for it, Loh said. We still have more to do. This is only the beginning.
