EXERCISE NO. 2
1. A vertical conduit is carrying oil (s= 0.95). A differential mercury manometer is tapped into the conduit at points A & B. Determine the difference in pressure between A & B when h = 3 in. what is the difference in piezometric head between A & B?
PA+ (62.4 lb/ft3)(0.95)(23 x 1/12) =PB+ (62.4 lb/ft3)(0.95)(2 x 1/12) + (62.4 lb/ft3)(13.6)(3 x 1/12) PA - PB= 108.42 lb/ft2
hA = hA hB = hA hB =
hB =
+ +
hA hB = 3.32 ft.
2. Consider the two rectangular gates shown in the figure. They are both the same size, but one (Gate A) is help in place by a horizontal shaft through its midpoint and the other (Gate B) is cantilevered to a shaft at its top. Now consider the torque T required to hold the gates in the place as H is increased. Choose the valid statement (s): a) TA increases with H. b) TB increases with H. c) TA does not change with H. c) TB does not change with H.
3. For Gate A, choose the statements that are valid: a) the hydrostatic force acting on the gate increases as H increases. b) The distance between the center of pressure on the gate and the centroid of the gate decreases as H increases. c) The distance between the center of pressure on the gate and centroid of the gate remains constant as H increases. d) The torque applied to the shaft to prevent gate from turning must be increased as H increases. e) The torque applied to the shaft to prevent the gate from turning remains constant as H increases.
4. For the closed tank with Bourdon tube gages tapped into it, what if the specific gravity of the oil and the pressure reading on gage C?
