GUIDELINES ON SciDamaths

Objectives:
1. To integrate the Filipino checkerboard game of dama into the teaching of Science concepts and skills; 2. To analyze SciDama as possible subject of scientific investigations; 3. To enhance wholesome interpersonal relations among learners.

Sci Damaths Manual

Basically the rules in playing the Filipino checkerboard game called the dama will be used with some modifications in integrating Science and Mathematics as follows: 1. Set the starting position of the chips 2. Toss a coin who moves first. (Red chips will move first.) 3. The two players alternately take turn in moving a piece. ( Pass is not allowed) Touch move shall be observed in the game. A player who touches a chip is required to move that chip unless it is illegal to do so.

4. A chip has to take opponents chip diagonally forward only or backward,. Mathematical operations ( + ,- ,x, / ) will be used depending on the vacant squares operation symbol where the taker chip lands by jumping over the taken chip ( the latter chip has to be removed from the board after performing the indicated mathematical operation and recording in the same score sheet) 5. All moves shall be in the forward direction except in taking a chip (forward or backward) or if a chip is already a dama.

6. After making a move, a player shall record his move in one score sheet. 7. Each player is only allowed one (1) minute to move including the recording of the move and score in the score sheet. 8. A warning is given to a player by the arbiter if no move is made after one minute, and consequently, he/she is force to move a chip. 9. Continuous violation of this rule #8 will disqualify the player even if he is leading in the scoresheet at the time of the violation. Fourth violation means disqualification. 10. A chip is declared a dama if it reaches and stops terminally in any of the following squares : For red chips: (0,7) (2,7) (4,7) (6,7) For blue chips: (1,0) (3,0) (5,0) (7,0)

11. Once a piece is declared dama, it could slide diagonally forward or backward in any vacant square provided no opposing piece blocks it. It could take a piece or pieces and doubles the score. 12. Similarly, if an ordinary chip takes a dama the score is doubled and if a dama takes another dama the score is times four (4). 13. A player can take one chip or more than one chip with required option to take the greater number of chips. (dama rules on dama prevail) 14. Between a dama taking a chip and a chip taking another chip, the former is obliged. Between a dama taking a chip and a damaeating (2) two or more chips, the latter prevails. 15. Dama chip should be identified by encircling the chip in the scoresheet. 16. The game ends after 20 minutes

17. The game also ends if: a. the moves are repetitive b. a player has no more move c.a player has no more chip. 18. The remaining chip(s) of player is added to his total score algebraically. If the remaining chip is a dama, the value of the chip is doubled. 19. The player with the lesser accumulated total score wins the game. 20. The player may or may not use a calculator. 21. Only players are allowed to raise questions during the game through the arbiter. 22. No questions will be entertained after the game. 23. Arbiter is always right in his decision.
