New Theory of Flight

Johan Hoffman1 , Johan Jansson2 and Claes Johnson3 School of Computer Science and Communication, KTH, Stockholm, Sweden

We present a new mathematical theory explaining the uid mechanics of subsonic ight, which is fundamentally different from the existing circulation theory by Kutta-Zhukovsky-Prandtl formed 100 year ago. The new theory is based on a new resolution of dAlemberts paradox showing that slightly viscous bluff body ow can be viewed as zero-drag/lift potential ow modied by a specic separation instability into turbulent ow with nonzero drag/lift. For a wing this separation mechanism maintains the large lift of potential ow generated at the leading edge at the price of small drag, resulting in a lift to drag quotient in the range 10 70 which allows ight at affordable power. The new mathematical theory is supported by computed turbulent solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations with small skin friction boundary conditions in close accordance with experimental observations.

Introduction
