Neupane, R. K. 1983. J. Inst. Agric. Anim. Sci. 4:1-5. Keywords: Maize, soybean, intercropping, yield An intercropping experiment with maize and soybeans in eight different planting arrangements was conducted at the Agronomy Farm, Khumaltar during the summer of 1979 to find out the best intercropping arrangement on the basis of total grain production, gross monetary returns, and the Land Equivalent Ratio (LER). The yield of intercropped maize did not differ significantly from the monocropped maize yield. The intercropped soybean yields were less for all intercropping arrangements than the monocropped soybean yield. A soybean yield of 7 to 9 q/ha could be harvested without reducing maize yield by intercropping maize with soybean in proper planting arrangements. Planting four rows of soybean in between two paired rows of maize spaced 2 m apart, one row of soybean between two maize rows 1 m apart and planting soybean on both sides of maize rows spaced 1 m apart were found equally good for getting maximum total production from intercropping. Gross monetary returns and LER value were also higher for those planting arrangements. Compared with monocrops of maize and soybean, intercropping was found to be highly remunerative.
