Gattaca
A Science Fiction Movie with an Emphasis on Genetics

Gattaca is a 1997 science-fiction film which envisions a society in the not-too-distant future that is divided by two races: the inferior and superior race; and wherein human reproduction is guided by genetic engineering also known as genetic modification, whose aim is to change the genetic makeup of cells to produce novel species of organisms. The movie started with a baby whose DNA has been analyzed soon after he was born. Since he was conceived in what they called the natural way, his genetic make-up was categorized under the inferior race, one of the underclass of humans who were only deemed useful for lowly jobs. Despite having a society that determines careers by discriminating against ones genes, Vincent only had one career in mind and that was to be able to travel in space. In order to do so, he assumed the identity of a perfect genetic human being who was crippled in a car accident named Jerome Morrow. Vincent sought professional advice in order to learn how to deceive various gene tests so that he will be able to hide his true identity. He was then able to enter the Gattaca Space Academy of the Gattaca Corporation, an aerospace firm in the future, wherein after some time he was considered part of the elite due to his exemplary performance. He kept up with his faade by continuously passing gene tests through the samples from the real Jerome; samples like hair, skin, blood, and urine wherein ones genetic makeup may be identified. By the time he was finally schedule a space mission to Titan, Saturns 14 th moon, his dream was jeopardized and his secret was threatened to be exposed due to the unexpected murder of Gattacas director. Despite being considered as one of the invalids, Vincent, in the end, was able to fulfill his dream to travel to space.
