A NATION EMERGES: CANADA AND WORLD WAR I

SOCIAL STUDIES 11

When war broke out in 1914, thousands of young men in Canada and around the world rushed to enlist. The war offered excitement, the opportunity to travel, and romantic notions of heroism and of ghting for ones Country. In reality, however, millions would die, billions of dollars would be spent, and no one was or is really certain why. From the Canadian perspective, however, WWI is often seen as the birthplace of a modern, independent Canada independent from Great Britain socially, politically and economically.
