Gluteal Strengthening Open Clamshells

The following is to strengthen the left gluteal muscles. Lie on the opposite side to strengthen the right side. Support the neck / head with a pillow and lie on the right side with the hips flexed about 45o and the knees bent about 90o While keeping the heels together, spread the knees apart. Be careful to avoid allowing the pelvis to rotate backward. The hips should remain vertically aligned. Perform this exercise slowly. The first few repetitions will feel very easy. In order to advance the exercise, a dumbbell may be held against the left thigh with the left hand.

Unless otherwise indicated below, this exercise should be performed to fatigue (usually about 15-20 repetitions).
