    The singer recalls visiting a friend called darkness and reflecting on a vision he had while sleeping. The vision has remained in his mind like the sound of silence. In restless dreams, he walked alone down narrow cobblestone streets, feeling cold and alone under a street lamp. His eyes were startled by the flash of a neon light that split the night. He saw thousands of people talking without communicating or listening. People were writing songs that no one shared aloud. No one dared disturb the sound of silence. The singer tries to teach the people but his words fell like silent raindrops and echoed in the wells of silence. The people prayed to the neon god they had created, as the sign warned in the words it was forming
