Representation Investigation

What is representation?
Representation is when an individual that holds power over an iconic or famous idol uses their position in order to create a constant synergistic image that can be used through multimedia convergence in order to allow the audience and fan base to create a permanent link to the image that is being distributed to them through the platforms.

What representation theorists can you find?

Stuart Hall emphasizes the importance of visual representation the image seems to be the prevalent sign of late modern culture.
Branston and stafford state that there are characteristics to representation such as: A categrosing and evaluation of the group being stereotyped. Emphasize on specific features which are easily recognised by the audience for them to draw the conclusion of the represented group. Evaluation is often a negative one. Horror and genre can also be linked to Laura Mulveys male gaze theory such as in Halloween where we see a woman thought the males POV which can lead the viewer to the stereotypical view of the vulnerable and innocent woman.

What representation theorists link to the horror genre?

Representation can be linked to horror films such as the representation of gender. This is because women are represented as vulnerable and an easy target within horror films. However the horror genre also allows this stereotypical view of women to be challenged , because as the story progresses we can see how the women can become stronger and overcome the villain.
