Passive Voice Simple Past

Use

The passive voice is often used when it is unknown who performs the action. Also used to avoid naming who does the action.

Affirmative

We use the verb 'to be' in the past followed by a participle.


Subject Was / Were Past participle Complement

Examples The house was cleaned today. The desserts were made.

Negative

To form the negative we must deny the verb 'to be' in the past.
Subject Wasnt / Werent Past participle Complement

Examples The house wasn't cleaned today. The desserts weren't made.

Interrogative

For the formation of questions we need to invert the verb TO BE.

Answer

We use the verb 'to be' in the past to form the short answer.

Examples 1. Was the house cleaned today?

Yes, it was / No, it wasn't

Yes, they were / No, they weren't

Examples
She sang a song.

Somebody hit me.


We stopped the bus. A thief stole my car. They didn't let him go. She didn't win the prize. They didn't make their beds. I did not tell them. Did you tell them? Did he send the letter?
