Chain Tong Operation

Purpose: The purpose of this procedure is to outline the safe use and operation of a Chain Tong. Procedure: 1. Ensure correct safety gear is worn: Hard Hat Safety Glasses Safety Boots Gloves 2. Select a chain tong of sufficient size for the job at hand. 3. Before using the tong check chain for broken links and pins, handle and jaws for cracks and that the teeth are clean. 4. To make up joint, hold tong with right hand and throw the chain (make sure all personnel are clear) around pipe anti clockwise and catch the chain with left hand. Hold the body of the tong against pipe can latch the chain into the jaws with no slack. 5. Hold the tong square to the pipe, and pull the handle straight back away from the pipe to engage the jaws onto the pipe. 6. Turn pipe clockwise until joint made-up, then push the tong anti-clockwise to free the jaws, then unlatch the chain. Return tong to storage.

7. To break-out joint use above procedure in reverse. Note: Chain tongs should be : Pulled under hard tension. : Pushed when easy. Keep chains lubricated to prevent seizure of the pins and links. Chain tongs or pipe wrenches must never be used in high torque applications, (ie. Final make-up or initial break-out). Never modify chain tongs. Never increase the leverage of a tong with a pipe extension. Never throw tongs onto steel deck. Stow properly so as not to fall across legs etc.
