Golden Venture Folding: Candy Cane

Make anywhere between 30 and 50 triangular units (see instructions here) 1. Place the triangular units side-by-side upright. Place them so that they are balanced on the broad base. They should look like mountains. 2. Insert the tabs of the second unit into the pockets of the first unit. 3. Repeat until you have as many as you want in a row.

4. Gently curve the right side of the row upwards to form the curved hook of a candy cane. Option: fold the tip of the first triangular unit back so that the candy cane does not have a pointed bottom. Depending on the type of paper you use and the size of the units, you may or may not need to use glue. If you need to use glue, simply apply a small dot of glue on the tabs before inserting them into the pockets. In this photo, 45 triangular units were assembled with no glue.

There are a variety of ways to make the basic triangular unit, but the method shown here is probably the most efficient in its use of paper. This is particularly important when you are making models that require hundreds of triangular units.

1. Start with a square sheet of paper and cut it into 4 strips. Fold the strips in half crosswise. 2. Fold the bottom-left and bottom-right edges up to meet the midline. 3. Turn the model over. 4. Fold the top-left and top-right corners towards the middle of the unit. 5. Fold the triangular tab down on both sides. 6. Fold the right side onto left side. The directionality is critical here. Do not fold the left side behind the right half. 7. When done, the unit should have two tabs and two pockets.
