Santiago, Esmeralda. When I was Puerto Rican.
Esmeralda Santiago's story begins in rural Puerto Rico, where her parents and seven siblings led a life of uproar, but of love and tenderness as well. When she seemed to have learned everything, she was taken to New York City, where the rules -and the languagewere different. This is the journey of a truly remarkable woman.

Martel, Yann. Life of Pi

Sixteen year old Pi Patel is raised in Pondicherry, India, and is the son of a zookeeper. When his family plans to move to Canada, his father packs up the family and their zoo animals and they hitch a ride on an enormous boat. After a frightening shipwreck, Pi finds himself adrift in the Pacific Ocean, trapped on a 26-foot lifeboat with a wounded zebra, a spotted hyena, a seasick orangutan, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. This is a story about adventure, survival and faith.

ESL 3A

Albom, Mitch. Tuesdays with Morrie.

Meet Morrie Schwartz, a one of a kind professor, whom the author describes as looking like a cross between a biblical prophet and Christmas elf as he faces his final days dying from a terminal illness. Even on his deathbed, this twinkling-eyed mensch manages to teach us all about living robustly and fully.

ESL 2A
Cisneros, Sandra. The House on Mango Street.
The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn't want to belong- not to her run-down neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her. Esperanza's story is that of a young girl coming into her power, and inventing for herself what she will become.
